A PENSIONER who missed her lift home after attending a service at Darlington Crematorium would like to thank the “knight in shining armour” who came to her rescue.

Noreen Staples, of Barnard Castle, grew extremely anxious when she lost her bearings and found herself alone in the pouring rain on a dark and windy night.

The 78-year-old eventually found her way back to the crematorium where the kind-hearted caretaker immediately came to her assistance.

“I was soaking wet and shaking like a leaf,” said Ms Staples.

“His name was John and I don’t know what I would have done without him. When he wasn’t able to get me a taxi back to Barnard Castle, he took me to my grandson’s in Darlington himself and refused to take any money.

“I just want to say how grateful I am. He was my knight in shining armour.”
