A £500,000 supported living scheme has been officially opened in Consett.

Four Housing has converted 64 Durham Road, which has stood empty for some time, into six one- bedroomed, self-contained apartments – one of which is fully accessible for wheelchair users – a communal kitchen and dining area, and office space for its staff.

Residents will be supported in areas including money management and budgeting, developing confidence and life skills, as well as educational and vocational training.

Chief Executive Paul Tanney said: “We’re pleased to be able to open 64 Durham Road and offer this supported housing scheme to residents who may need more support than some of our other customers.”

North West Durham MP Pat Glass said: “It is an honour to be able to open this great facility. “Most people need a little help at some point in their lives and 64 Durham Road offers a real opportunity for people to live independently while getting back on their feet with the support of trained professionals.”

Four Housing received approximately £200,000 towards the project from the Homes and Communities Agency.
