A MAN from Coxhoe, seriously hurt when his car crashed on the A1 motorway at the weekend, has died in hospital.

The crash happened at 7.40am on Sunday, January 12 as 25-year-old Kevin Campbell, from Bridge End, was driving his Fiat Punto on the southbound carriageway.

"About a mile south of junction 60 at Bradbury his car left the road and collided with the crash barrier and then a tree," said a spokesman for Durham Constabulary.

"Mr Campbell was taken to the James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough by air ambulance with serious head and chest injuries. Sadly, on Tuesday he died from his injuries.

"He is originally from Edinburgh where his parents and younger brother still live, and he worked at a care home in Darlington. The accident on Sunday happened as he was travelling to work at the home."

Police are continuing to appeal for any witnesses to ring 101 and ask for either road policing or the collision investigation unit.
