Toast Bard at Caledonian Society's annual Burns Night Supper in Durham
THE annual Burns Night Supper will be staged by the Durham and District Caledonian Society to celebrate the Scottish Bard’s birthday, on Saturday (January 25).
Robbie Burns, born on January 25, 1759, in Ayrshire, went on to become Scotland’s most celebrated poet in his relatively short, 37-year life.
A piper-led haggis dinner will be staged at the Masonic Hall, in Old Elvet, Durham, with traditional toasts, songs and recitations, from 7pm.
There is a £32 charge, with further details available from association secretary Joan Livingstone, on 0191-386 5856.
ART WALK: Artist Sophy Nixon leads a two-mile walk during which participants can stop off to take in scenic views to sketch, on Saturday (January 25).
It starts near the sign for the Pump House, at Houghall Woods parking area, off the A177 Durham to Shincliffe road, at 10am.
Walkers taking part should take something on which to sit and an umbrella. There is a £4 charge.
VINTAGE JAZZ: Audience tickets for Saturday’s (January 25), DJam, international vintage jazz festival ‘Ritz and Glitz’ party, at the Radisson Hotel, Framwelgate Waterside, Durham, are available for £27. PRISON OFFICERS’ REUNION: A re-union for current and former prison staff in Durham takes place at the Tythe Barn Club, the former Prison Officers’ Club, off Hallgarth Street, on Tuesday February 11, at 7pm.
The event has grown over the past few years as a popular means for ex-prison officers to keep in touch with former colleagues.
DRINKERS’ AWARDS: The deadline for nominations for the Durham branch of the Campaign for Real Ale’s annual awards has been extended to Sunday (January 26).
Nominations should be sent by email to the branch secretary via firstname.lastname@example.org, with categories including best pub, club and cider pub.
