Drunken man walks free from court after spitting blood in face of a police officer

A DRUNKEN man has narrowly escaped jail after spitting blood in the face of a police officer.

Scott Connor was drunk and covered in blood from a head injury when he was found by a police officer in Brinkburn Road, Darlington, on December 7 last year.

The 22-year-old was taken by the officer to Darlington Memorial Hospital where he began to scream and shout before banging his head against a wall, the town’s magistrates heard.

Prosecutor Graham Jacobs said Connor was put in a police van to calm down, but he continued to bang his head against the side of the vehicle, causing it to bleed even more.

After becoming more excitable, Connor then spat a mouth full of blood in the officer’s face, some of which went into his mouth.

The officer has since had to undergo a number of medical examinations to test for infections.

Mitigating Warren Ridley said the assault was out of character and Connor was extremely ashamed of his actions.

He said: “Mr Connor fully accepts the seriousness of the offences. He has very little memory of what happened.

“He accepts he was out drinking to excess and for some reason unknown to himself he began to self-harm.

“He has a good work ethic, he is currently employed and in a stable relationship. You have someone who has shown remorse.”

Connor, of Harrison Terrace, Darlington, admitted being drunk and disorderly, assaulting a police constable in execution of their duty and failing to surrender to police bail at an earlier hearing and returned to court today (Thursday, January 23) for sentencing.

Sentencing him to six weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months, chairman of the bench, Colin Beadle, told Connor: “This is a most despicable and dangerous act against a police officer in the execution of his duty.

“They escorted you to hospital, which is their duty, and there you behaved in a disorderly and disgraceful manner.”

Connor was also ordered to complete 80 hours of unpaid work and pay £200 in compensation to the officer, an £80 victim surcharge and £85 costs.

Disgraceful and disgusting
(a)by the lowlife who spat blood in a Police Officers face
(b) the Magistrates who let him off with a slap on the wrists and told him not to be a naughty boy for a year
The guy didn't even turn up for his first hearing.
They treat the law and its enforcers with contempt and then when in court act contrite and angelic.
The public and I dare say the police are sick to the back teeth of the way the courts don't punish these offenders with any meaningful sentences.
No doubt back in the Brinkie laughing and bigging up to his mates how he gobbed blood on a copper..

Darloresident is correct; police officers are obviously fair game to the courts; let the same happen to the unaccountable unelected & out of touch magistrates and see how they feel! A polce officer or member of the public is not there to be abused by the recklass behaviour of someone under the influence, sorry or not the punishment should be far more, he will be laughing at the law and all the lowlifes who hear this result will have little hesitation in assaulting a police officer. The courts have lost all public (and probably police) confidence thanks to their softly softly pampering of offenders.

I am furious. Why should a police officer be treated like that at work? How has this animal escaped jail? The fact he turned AE upside down enough to be removed is grounds enough for punishment.....

Once again the BENCH in Darlington proves it is a waste of time, the police do their jobs, catch the villian's and the Bench in Darlington Allows them to walk? I wonder what would have happened if the Court or its officer was spat at? This certainly does not inspire confidence in the Judicial system in Darlington.

Disgusting when the police were safeguarding him to make sure him and the A&E staff did not come to any harm. I am sick to death of folk slagging the Police off. There is good and bad in every walk of life. I am not suggesting any of the comments on here have, but lets be honest they get it all the time. If only you could see the crap they really have to put up with, alongside our other vital services and hospital staff. Would it be acceptable if the Police Officer now has hepatitis or HIV because of this? The Justice system in this town must live in a rose filled bubble as they truly show no recognition of reality. I have always said even thou I do not drink now, in my younger years I always knew what I was doing even when I was hammered, so not remembering is never an excuse. Scum who behaved like this free to walk round and do it again. Tip to the Police Officer, claim through civil proceedings against him and the justice system for the stress caused waiting for results on your health.

Mind you, there are also other cases reported on here of serious violence being used on people (worse than spitting blood) and those offenders are also being allowed to walk free. So it's getting worse. The Echo does not seem to allow comments on such cases anymore, for some reason.

And I see two people have just received immediate jail sentences for sending nasty comments on Twitter! But beating people senseless in town leads to nothing but a slap on the wrist...why is British 'justice' so appalling?

Who'd be a copper or a nurse working in an A&E department. Scum like this are ruining our country and the law is allowing them to do it unpunished. Shame on the magistrate who allowed this filthy toe rag to go free. I'd have given him 2 years.
