A GROUP of former committee men are hoping to buck the trend of pubs closing by opening a new private members’ club.

A number of people formerly involved in running Neville’s Cross Club in Durham City, which has now closed, are involved in The New Cross, which has just opened in the former Langley Moor Hotel.

About £25,000 has been spent refurbishing the premises, on Front Street, Langley Moor, near Durham, as it had been empty for about five years.

The venue opened shortly before Christmas and applications are invited for membership, which costs £5 a year.

A club spokesman said: “Workingmen’s clubs are struggling and that’s why we’re trying to make this an exclusive private club where people can come and feel safe.

“We want a warm, welcoming atmosphere where people can enjoy a night out and feel safe.”

The club offers a darts and dominoes area, pool table and live entertainment and is open Monday to Friday from 7pm to midnight and Saturday and Sunday from noon to midnight.

Anyone interested in becoming a member should visit the club or call 0191-378-2235 during opening hours.
