Great Aycliffe Town Council press ahead with plans to sell land for social housing
A TOWN council is pressing ahead with plans to sell a disused caravan storage area to a social housing provider.
It is expected the land will be used for social housing, including bungalows and apartments for elderly people.
Livin is prepared to pay £110,000 for the site and an agreement has also been reached that will see the housing provider cover any legal costs incurred during the sale.
Last night (Wednesday, January 29), during a meeting at the council offices on School Aycliffe Lane, town clerk Andrew Bailey said pedestrian and vehicle access to Great Aycliffe Way and the nature park would be maintained as a condition of the sale.
Councillor Eddy Adam said: “I welcome the proposal and fully support the recommendation. The sale will allow livin to build affordable homes for people to rent and provide bungalows for the aged population.”
The land is not classed as “open space,” which means the council is not required to provide notice or consult on the sale.
However, Coun Adam suggested the council publicises its intentions in the media to ensure nearby residents are aware of what is going on.
