PARISH councillors are backing proposals to provide transport for young villagers to access sports facilities in a nearby town.

Gainford and Langton Parish Council has agreed to fund a ten-week pilot scheme, costing £350, to transport 15 young people, by minibus, to The Hub, in Barnard Castle, once a week.

The weekly trip would enable youngsters aged ten to 15 to use facilities at The Hub for two hours.

A similar scheme running from Cotherstone has proved popular, costing £2 a week, including a meal.

A parent briefing will take place in the near future to discuss permission and details of the sessions.

Although the day has yet to be confirmed, it is thought the initiative will run on a Friday.

If successful, another minibus could be laid on for another 16 children in the future.

Following the completion of the ten-week pilot scheme, any further trips would require some monetary contribution from users.
