MUSIC and morals proved a harmonious combination when primary school children embarked on a week-long singing workshop.

St Francis Church of England Primary School in Newton Aycliffe joined forces with music education charity PopUK for the project, which has seen youngsters learn new songs and record a CD.

The fun will culminate with a concert at nearby Greenfield Community College from 6.15pm next Tuesday (February 11).

Founded by Andy Silver, PopUK uses music and performance to engage children, schools, churches and other community groups to develop and celebrate the values of understanding and respect.

Over the last few days, the children have learnt seven songs, promoting messages such as the importance of relationships over material possessions and not judging people on how they look.

Today (Thursday, February 6), the whole school gathered to record the songs on to a CD, which will go on sale at the concert priced at £4.

“The children have been brilliant,” said Mr Silver. “The best thing about this project is it involves the whole school working together. The CD is important because it becomes a memory, which they can go back to again and again over the years.”

Headteacher Jane Wilkinson added: “The children are really looking forward to sharing the songs with their friends and family at the concert.”

Tickets for the concert cost £1 for adults and 50 pence for children and must be purchased in advance from the school. Contact 01325-300236.
