IT IS hoped a street performance involving a giant puppet may set a new world record.

The Coastival arts festival in Scarborough will feature about 100 events over this weekend. The celebration will begin on Friday, February 14 and run until Sunday, February 16.

One of the highlights of the three-day festival will be an epic two-part seafront performance, Orpheus the Mariner, featuring huge puppets and a record attempt for the largest puppet in the world.

It will be staged by the Animated Objects Theatre Company, with the help of the local community, on Scarborough seafront from 5.30pm on February 14 and 15. The world record attempt will be on Saturday, February 15 from 6.30pm in Valley Road.

The festival will feature a diverse range of music, theatre, films, dance, performance and visual arts, as well as activities for children and young people. British acid jazz band the Brand New Heavies, supported by Nubiyan Twist, will feature at the Spa Grand Hall from 8pm on Friday (February 14).

There will also be a jazz sessions and acoustic acts featuring throughout the festival at the Spa Grand Hall and elsewhere in the seaside resort.
