Barnard Castle town councillors agree £100 donation to North East War Memorials Project
A PROJECT which aims to record every war memorial between the Tweed and the Tees is hoping supporters will help raise thousands of pounds to cover the costs of a new-look website.
The North-East War Memorials Project (NEWMP) spent more than £10,000 updating its online presence, which attracts tens of thousands of visitors every year.
Officials of the volunteer-run project have issued a general appeal to all councils and parishes in the region, as well as asking visitors to the site for donations.
Barnard Castle Town Council's partnership committee agreed to give £100 to the appeal after hearing details of 22 memorials in the town listed on the site.
NEWMP secretary Dorothy Hall said in total, 4,550 memorials across the North-East are now recorded.
She said the project's website was launched in 2006 with cash from the Heritage Lottery fund.
“Advances in technology meant we felt it necessary to update the website. It is more user friendly for a wider, possibly younger, audience,” she said.
“2014-19 will be a time when all communities will be able to remember the sacrifices not only of those who died and their families but those who served and returned home.
“Every town and village was affected and this is our opportunity to see that those who made the ultimate sacrifice are not forgotten,” added Mrs Hall.
