Anti-social behaviour in Darlington is because residents have nothing to do, according to councillor

ANTI-SOCIAL behaviour in Darlington comes because its residents have nothing to do, according to a local councillor.

Following concerns raised at a PACT meeting, Councillor David Regan said unemployment and the effects of the credit crunch were also contributory factors.

He said: “Anti-social behaviour is a problem in the whole town.

“People have nothing to do and due to the credit crunch people are unemployed, lots of places are shutting down and social lives have dwindled.”

The PACT meeting, held in Cockerton last night (Wednesday, February 12), saw residents raise concerns around unlicensed motorcycles, dangerous driving and excessive noise.

Coun Regan said the situation required a balanced approach.

He said: “There needs to be a balance, young people kicking a ball outside can be a problem to some yet not so much to others.

“With the use of mobile phones now there are bigger groups gathering which can be intimidating.”

Darlington Police said they were aware of the issues raised and were working to tackle them.

Sergeant Dave Kirton said: “We’re aware of anti-social behaviour in the area and we are proactively tackling it in particularly places like the Tillage Green and the West Park area.

“This weekend we’re using extra police officers and they will be going out on mountain bikes to try and help to solve the issues.”

It still doesn't make them any less responsible for their actions.
It's always been too easy to rationalise unacceptable behavior, but this resolves nothing.
'There's nothing else to do' has been used for years by groups who know they're doing wrong, but want to blame external factors rather than accept responsibility.

I think a new way of looking at it should be enforced.
'But there's nothing to do Officer.'
'Well son, you can start by earning some money to pay for the release of your now impounded bike and accompanying fine.'
'But there's no jobs available, I'll have to do something illegal to get the money.'
'Then you'll be doing the same work for free via community service and scrapping the bike. It's your call son.'

Ok, it's OTT, but I'm fed up of the excuses.
I was out of work for 8 months a few years ago and on the verge of losing my house, but not once did I consider antisocial or illegal actions as a valid option. An there are many people who feel the same.

Always prosecute when appropriate, and make community service the default punishment. Then they will have something to do.

Councillor Regan is a prat. He obviously lives on a different planet to the rest of us. Another council numpty who hasn't got the brains he was born with.

I agree with JJ2000 and behonest . Nothing to do is not an excuse for damaging cars , breaking residential and shop windows and everything else that these feral gangs perpetrate. Cllr Regan would do a better job asking DBC Chief Executive Ada Burns what exactly do her regular meetings with local senior police officers actually achieve for this town ?
