A DRIVER was found to be almost two times the drink drive limit after crashing his car into a hedge on his way home from a pub’s karaoke night.

David Trevor Laws had 92mcg of alcohol in 100 ml of breath, the legal limit being 35mcg, magistrates in Newton Aycliffe heard.

Laws, 32, of College View, Esh Winning, pleaded guilty to drink driving.

Prosecutor Alan Davison said Laws was driving a Nissan Almera along Whitworth Road, Spennymoor, after a night out at a pub in Shildon when his vehicle crashed into a hedge.

Laws told police he had been running the karaoke at the pub and was driving home when the accident occurred.

He said he had approached a traffic calming measure with right of way over an oncoming car, but the other vehicle drove straight through meaning Laws had to swerve.

Laws said the other driver drove off without stopping.

The court heard that Laws was banned from driving for 27 months in 2008 after being convicted of drink driving.

He will return to the court on March 7 for sentencing after magistrates asked for a report to be prepared and was given unconditional bail.
