Class 4 pupils at Sessay CE Primary School, near Thirsk, North Yorkshire, sampled wartime rationing as part of their studies into the Second World War.

Louise Waite, from the school, said as part of their experience the children had ration books stamped before they could have lunch.

She said: “The school cook had prepared a lovely vegetable hot pot from the vegetables that were available.

The children also spent some of the day building models of Anderson Shelters, barrage balloons, tanks and planes to display in their classroom as part of the project.
