A CHARITY day held at a Darlington shop yesterday (Saturday, February 22) was particularly poignant for one member of staff.

Adam Young, team leader at TK Maxx on Crown Street, was one of many getting into the spirit of things as the shop hosted a series of activities to raise money for Cancer Research.

As part of a TK Maxx national initiative to support the charity, volunteers manned cake, tombola and facepainting stalls while local musician – and Mr Young’s sister – This Little Bird, aka Rebecca Young, performed in-store.

The cause is particularly close to the hearts of the Young siblings as their father is currently undergoing radon therapy to treat a growth on his back.

Mr Young said: “This is quite a personal thing for us and we really wanted to give our support to this and help to raise awareness.

“It’s been a great day and it’s been nice to see so many customers showing their support too.

“It’s been especially nice to see so many families as cancer hits a lot of young people.”

As part of the initiative, TK Maxx is inviting customers to donate bags of unwanted goods to be sold in Cancer Research charity shops across the country.

So far, about 80 bags have been donated at the Darlington shop but staff are hoping to collect 350 by the end of March, which marks the end of the six week campaign.

To donate, take bags to the in store drop-off point.
