Council left with £400 bill after vandals rip off play area gates in Chilton
VANDALS who damaged two gates after tearing them down in a children’s play park have landed Chilton Town Council with a £400 bill.
The wreckers wrenched one of the gates from its hinges at Pentland's Park, over the last few weeks. The other gate was damaged about a year ago.
Both of gates were found dumped nearby but it would be as cheap to replace as repair them as their hydraulic closing mechanism has been damaged.
Vicky Nelson, the council's clerical officerl, said: “We think that the damage has been done by some of the older children.
“We think that they have used something to get the gates off. They’ve taken them off and then they’ve just chucked them onto the floor.
“The park is not regularly targeted by vandals but the gates are designed to keep the children safe in the play area and to keep out dogs.”
The police have been informed and the play area remainsl open. The council is looking to replace the gates which are expected to cost £200 each.
Anyone who can help with enquiries into the damage should contact Durham Police on 101.
