A PET supplies store is to open a new £400,000 branch later this month, creating 11 jobs.

Pets At Home says more than 400 people applied for posts at its new store in Consett, due to open on March 27.

The new 4,800 sq ft store is on the town’s Hermiston Retail Park, near Morrisons supermarket.

Andrea Bruce, area manager with the retailer, said: "There was a strong demand from Consett pet owners for Pets at Home to come to town, and we’re very pleased to have been able to grant them their wish.

"Pets at Home is committed to recruiting from the local area and I’m pleased we’ve found a team of talented individuals in Consett.

"They’re all extremely passionate about pets and can’t wait to get started."

Peter Stonehouse, previously manager of the company’s Bishop Auckland store, has been appointed manager of the new branch.

He said: "It’s been a busy few months and now my team and I are excited to open the doors and welcome our new customers and their pets to the store."
