SIXTY-three pupils from the same school have had poems printed in a young writers’ anthology.

The Belmont Community School youngsters will see their work in print in The Poetry Games – Creative Voices book, following the Young Writers’ The Poetry Games 2014 competition.

The aspiring authors were challenged to write about an issue important to them. Between them they chose war, football, family, stereotyping and more.

Millie Buckle, 11, said: “I’m really looking forward to people seeing my poetry.

“My poem was called ‘It’s not my fault’ and it was on the subject of homelessness.

“I think it’s outrageous that there are homeless people in Britain as we’re such a rich country and we have a good education system. I wanted to show that people don’t choose to be homeless.”

Teacher Dean Wilkes said: “I’m very pleased with the response from our students.

“Their enthusiasm was very clear to see from the outset.

“They produced poetry which was very thought-provoking, deeply personal and well crafted.

“To become a published writer at such an early age is a fantastic accomplishment and I’m sure that parents, grandparents and of course the young poets themselves will be proud to see their work in print and on library shelves.”
