A MAJOR sporting event in Darlington’s charity calendar has been launched for the 27th year.

The 2014 Darlington 10k run will take place on August 10 and organisers have extended its capacity to 1,950 entrants after last year’s event attracted a record 1,450 runners.

In addition to the 10km race, the Family Fun Run will be held at 9am, and although there will be no 3km Junior Race, the prize category for athletes aged 15 to 17 will be included in the main race.

Coun Andy Scott, Darlington Council’s cabinet member for health and partnerships, said: “There is something for all ages and abilities.

“The Family Fun Run is an ideal way for all the family to get involved, have some fun and get fit, whilst the main race offers the more serious runner the chance to test themselves against others and their own personal best.

“Running is a free and effective way of increasing fitness levels and the online training plan will make it even easier to prepare for the event.”

Sherwoods of Darlington are headline sponsor for the twelfth year in succession, in partnership with Vauxhall.

Other supporters include The Northern Echo, TFM Radio, Mizuno, and Teesside University, who will again be providing the many bottles of water for the runners.

Coun Nick Wallis, cabinet member for leisure, said: “Many thanks to our sponsors who help to make this event possible.

“This event has become a firm fixture with local runners.

“Last year was our highest entry level ever and I am sure this year will prove to be another record-breaker.

“Now is the time to get your entry in and make a date for this popular event.”

This year’s nominated charities are Darlington Town Mission and St Teresa’s Hospice.

All profits from the 10km will go to the two charities, who have been nominated by Darlington Rotary Club, which works in partnership with Darlington Council on the event.
