Staindrop carnival committee needs new members
A LONG running village carnival needs new volunteers to ensure its survival.
The organising committee of Staindrop Carnival, which has dwindled to just three members, is appealing for help to run the event over the weekend of July 12 and 13.
Liz Cronin, one of the remaining committee members, urged villagers to attend a meeting at the Wheatsheaf pub, in Staindrop, on Thursday, March 20, at 7.30pm, to offer their support.
She said: “If no-one comes forward at the meeting then we will not be able to run the carnival this year.
“There used to be more than a dozen committee members but over the years that has diminished and now we are down to just three.
“There comes a time when it is beyond our capabilities.”
Plans are already falling behind schedule but Mrs Cronin hopes more people will help with the organisation so they can get back on track and the committee has pledged to support new volunteers in their roles.
Mrs Cronin said: “Last year’s carnival was perceived to be very successful.
“We had a lovely day and got some really good feedback from it.
“It would be such a shame to go from that to nothing.
“There is a good community value to it.”
In the week prior to carnival weekend activities in the village include a netball competition, talent show, treasure hunt and selection of the carnival queen.
The carnival will take place on the Saturday and there will be a pet show and sports day on the Sunday.
Anyone unable to attend the meeting but interested in helping can call Mrs Cronin on 01833-660217 or visit the village’s Post Office.
