A WOMAN with a zest for life celebrated her 105th birthday today (Wednesday, March 19).

Maud Brown enjoyed a party with family and friends at Howlish Hall nursing and residential home, in Coundon.

The mother-of-four only moved there three weeks ago, having lived independently for many years in Shildon.

Mrs Brown received a birthday card from the Queen and a letter from Iain Duncan Smith, the Secretary of State for work and pensions.

Mrs Brown, who also had 17 grandchildren, was also showered with flowers and wishes, including from staff at Dale Care who looked after her when she lived in Shildon.

Son-in-law Michael Wigley said: “She has always had a zest for life. She worked hard and enjoyed. She was always very active.”
