A LONG established community group has been cooking up a storm to raise funds for a world-class athletics facility in Sedgefield.

Sedgefield Inner Wheel teamed up with Sainsbury’s to hold a cookery evening in aid of the Friends of Sedgefield Harriers, the charity that is raising money to create a synthetic running track in the town.

The event was a great success and, earlier this month, club members handed over a £600 cheque to the charity’s chairman, Clive Crosby.

Beryl Swinbank, president of Sedgefield Inner Wheel, said: “Our ladies work hard to contribute to a wide range of community projects and events and it was a pleasure to be able to raise funds for such a worthwhile cause.”

Founded in 1983, Sedgefield Inner Wheel is a women’s community organisation with links to the Rotary Club and supports many causes and events in the town.

Mr Crosby added: “It is fantastic that organisations such as this are prepared to get behind the Harriers’ ambitious project, recognising the positive impact the track could have for all parts of our community."

Sedgefield Harriers launched the Back the Track project last year and has secured planning permission for track and field events facilities at Sedgefield Community College.

The club needs to raise around £500,000 to complete the project.
