A STREET in a north Durham town centre was closed when debris was dislodged from the gable end of a building in high winds.
Police cordoned off Queen Street, between Victoria Road and Middle Street, Consett, after brickwork fell of the side Home Bargains at about 9am.
According to an eye witness the winds had lifted part of the edge of the roof and dislodged a number of bricks.
A Durham County Council spokesman said: “Police requested a road closure on Queen Street this morning due to the fallen debris and as soon as repairs are carried out, and it is safe to do so, we will arrange for the road to be re-opened again.
“We understand Home Bargains will appoint someone to carry out repairs.”
Home Bargains did not wish to comment.
