POLICE are appealing for witnesses after two teenage girls were injured in a hit-and-run.

The girls aged 15 and 16, were hit by a small dark vehicle - possibly a Vauxhall Corsa - on the crossing outside Meadowside Primary School, on Halfpenny Lane, in Knaresborough, North Yorkshire, at about 6.45pm tonight.

The vehicle, which had travelled from the direction of Boroughbridge Road, stopped briefly at the scene and a white woman aged about 60-years-old, got out of the driver's seat before getting back in without saying anything.

She then drove off in the direction of Chain Lane.

One of the girls suffered a broken bone in her foot and the other sustained a suspected broken wrist. They were both taken to hospital for treatment to their injuries.

Police are trying to trace the driver of the vehicle involved and are appealing to any witnesses to come forward.
