A MUSIC day for children with special needs will be held in Durham next month (Monday, April 7).

Jessie’s Fund, a charity which helps children with special needs to communicate through music, is working with The National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain (NYO) to stage the event.

Titled Join in the Music, it will be held at Durham University’s College of St Hild and St Bede on Monday, April 7.

Lucy Rugman, who led last year’s event, said: “The NYO members worked with the young people with great sensitivity and intuition, allowing them to really explore the instruments and express themselves in the way that they wanted.

“We gave a final showing of the pieces we had created to the rest of the NYO Inspire orchestra and to family and friends – a great performance, full of focus and dedicated musicianship from all involved.”

Annette Kelly, whose 11-year-old son Daniel took part, said: “Daniel so enjoyed it and his excitement was tangible.

“It was wonderful to see Daniel free to express himself through the music without boundaries.”
