YOUNGSTERS were able to get really into the spirit of things as they explored the origins of their current class book.

Year Six pupils at Malton primary have been studying Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and enjoyed a special workshop delving in the background of the classic novel.

In addition to finding out about the specific events surrounding the story’s creation, the children had an opportunity to bring to life some of the rich language of the 1818 story, even becoming the creature itself.

The afternoon workshop was delivered by specialist Jerome Monahan of ‘talk for learning’ consultancy TT Education.

“It was great the way the children tackled the sometimes very elaborate vocabulary and complex sentences people used in news reports and novels two hundred years ago,” said Mr Monahan.

“We covered a lot of material including one of the early reviews of Frankenstein completely dismissing the book because it had been written by a woman.”
