POLICE taught pupils, parents and teachers in Evenwood a lesson in speed awareness.

PCSO Sarah Downs organised a Speed Awareness Safety Day at Evenwood Primary School to promote road safety amongst children and adults.

Among the visitors to the school were the 4Real alcohol advice service, Durham County Council’s road safety team, Durham Police’s bike section and Road Policing Unit, including a speed camera, and the police helicopter landed in the school grounds.

Staff and pupils from the nearby Ramshaw Primary School also attended the event.

PCSO Downs said: “It was for all ages in the school, from reception class up to year six.

“It went very well, everyone really enjoyed it.”

Angela Rees, acting headteacher at Evenwood C of E Primary School, thanked PCSO Downs for organising the event and said the school had received a lot of positive feedback from parents and pupils’ family members who attended.

Mrs Rees added: “We have had cards and letters of appreciation coming in already.

“We really appreciate PCSO Downs’ help.

“We are working towards our Rights Respecting School award and one of the rights the children learn about is the right to stay safe.

“The speed awareness event was a fabulous opportunity for the children to learn how that right can be respected.”

The same event will take place at Toft Hill Primary School in June.
