PRIMARY school pupils enjoyed a taste of the exotic thanks to language students.

New College Durham students studying English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) visited Esh Primary School to teach the youngsters about their countries.

The Carousel of Culture gave pupils and staff a unique opportunity to speak to people from several countries they do not usually encounter.

The ESOL students gained valuable experience connecting with local people.

Activities included an international food market - pupils got their ‘passports’ stamped for each cuisine they sampled - Polish playground games, Japanese origami , language lessons in Kurdish, Spanish, Chinese and Arabic, music and dancing from Russia and Poland, and drumming and dancing from the Ivory Coast.

The ESOL students who took part come from Iran, Ukraine, Thailand, Turkey, Spain, Vietnam, Russia, Ivory Coast, Poland, China, Kurdistan, Egypt, Japan and Albania.
