A MUSIC and drama society promises to deliver a barrel of laughs with its next show.

Spennymoor Stage and Song will perform Pirates of Penzance at Spennymoor Town Hall from Wednesday, April 9 to Saturday, April 12.

Around 30 performers and 15 crew members will put on the Australian version of the Gilbert and Sullivan comedy opera.

Members have created all their own costumes, led by Alan Graham, and the scenery has been built and painted by former producer Eric Hickson, who plays the Major General in the show, and includes a pirate ship.

Business manager De Hickson said: “The music is exactly as written, but what goes on around it is a big send-up. It is very colourful, full of slapstick visual humour and suitable for all the family.”

Doors will open at 6.30pm for a 7pm start each night and there will be a Saturday matinee, 1.30pm for 2pm show.

Tickets are £8.50 for adults and £7.50 for concessions from John Welsh jewellers, on High Street, or on the door.
