LITTER pickers collected 17 bin bags full of rubbish during a Spring clean in Barnard Castle.

Members of Barnard Castle Town Council led the clean-up which saw 12 people clear the area round Scar Top and also Teesdale School.

It formed part of the LitterFree Durham’s Big Spring Clean 2014 campaign. The tidy up took place between 10am and noon yesterday. (Saturday, April 5)

Councillor Sandra Moorhouse said: “We picked up litter from both sides of the town and it was very successful.

“The youngest litter picker was seven-years-old and there were some amazing finds.

“It drives people mad to see so much litter. There is not a lot of growth and so people can see it. We wanted to get as much of it as we could and it really does look much better now.”

Highly commendable, I see it looks like mainly purely volunteer retired or near retired people doing the graft (work) picking up litter illegally deposited by 'bone-idle' litterers. A well overdue National Scheme in Britain should now be enforced by law, thereby getting ****most long term workshy free benefit punters, ''off their butts' and picking up litter and clearing up illegal fly tipping, thus contributing against their 'own nanny-nappy state benefits'. *Parts of the countryside and some towns in Britain resemble filthy 'open tips' caused mainly by a *pig ignorant minority who have 'no Pride in their community and/or general environment and as usually other 'working people' have to 'clean up' after them.
