A FOOTBALLER is a step nearer her sporting goal after securing a place at an American university.

Northallerton College student Hannah Kirk had five offers but opted to take her degree at the University of North Carolina - a prestigious scholarship to develop both her footballing and academic skills.

The 18-year-old striker, who lives in Northallerton, has played football since primary school and is a key member of Brompton Ladies.

“I have talked to as many coaches as possible and am now really looking forward to living, learning and playing in America,” she said.

“It is really hot in North Carolina which will make playing tougher but it will also help my stamina – and it’s less than an hour from the beach.”

Head of PE Anna Harvey said: “Moving to the States will be an incredible opportunity for Hannah which can’t fail to broaden her life experiences.

“America prides itself on having the very best facilities and coaching staff who imbue that all-important will-to-win that we see with US athletes of all sports.

“She has done incredibly well to secure a scholarship and, I’m sure, she will have an amazing time.”
