A CONSTRUCTION firm that launched a competition for community groups to win a DIY SOS-style makeover has chosen three finalists.

Charities and voluntary groups from across the region entered JDP Contracting Services’ Community Challenge in the hope of winning the firm’s services for a day.

From installing new windows at a community centre, to revamping a rugby club, the company, based at Newton Aycliffe, in County Durham, has been inundated with worthwhile causes.

And today (Wednesday, April 9), a panel of judges, led by JDP managing director Chris Hyde, selected the three finalists; St Clare’s Church Hall in Newton Aycliffe; Coundon and Leeholme Community Association and the North-East Autism Society.

The latter requested the team’s help to create a nature trail and petting zoo at the North East Centre for Autism in Newton Aycliffe, while the other two groups are seeking a revamp of tired facilities.

Mr Hyde said: “It was a very difficult decision and it is a shame we can’t help everybody.

“We were delighted with the response.”

The judges ranked the entries based on their fulfilment of criteria, including benefit to the wider community, support of disadvantaged areas and encouraging healthy lifestyles.

JDP will visit the three finalists before choosing the overall winner.

The winning group can expect a response similar to that of the BBC One series DIY SOS, which sees presenter Nick Knowles and a team of tradesmen and volunteers descend on a family home that is crying out for a makeover.
