A GRANT of £10,500 will support sports clubs across Durham and Chester-le-Street.

Durham Area Action Partnership (AAP) has given the money to the Durham and Chester-le-Street School Sports Partnership (SSP) to provide Change 4 Life sports clubs.

The clubs will provide sporting activities at a fun, informal level for children aged six to nine.

Qualified coaches will be on hand and equipment provided for activities including golf, gymnastics and various martial arts.

Initial sessions will be free, with paid options later on.

SSP manager Emma Nichol said: “We are trying to create a long-term positive change to children’s health by giving them a more positive attitude towards physical activity.

“At the end of each 12-week session, a celebration event will take place which will also involve parents and will include activities such as healthy eating workshops.”

There are schools taking part in Gilesgate, Sherburn Road estate, Newton Hall, Belmont, Ludworth, Pittington, Sherburn Village, Sherburn Hill, Framwellgate Moor, Neville’s Cross, Shincliffe and Bearpark.
