COUNTY Durham primary school children who aim to make a difference showcased their citizenship at a celebration event today (Friday, April 25).
The Go-Givers Make a Difference Challenge at Durham University’s Van Mildert College, saw 14 primary schools from County Durham and Darlington presenting citizenship projects that they have worked on.
Go-Givers is an educational programme from the Citizenship Foundation to develop caring and concerned citizens with the skills and confidence to make a positive difference to their communities.
It was held in partnership with County Durham Community Foundation.
At the end of each presentation today, the children were presented with certificates by Van Mildert College principal David Harper and the new High Sheriff of County Durham, Gerry Osborne, who is also a trustee of County Durham Community Foundation.
Mr Osborne said: “I am delighted to attend such a wonderful event.
“The children have worked very hard and produced some excellent citizenship presentations. “There have been some serious issues raised, and I believe that the children have benefitted from this programme.”
At the start of the challenge the children had to choose a cause or issue which they felt that they wanted to do something about, research their topic and identify the areas where they can contribute.
A range of topics included homelessness, animal cruelty, and supporting the elderly.
The Make a Difference Challenge aims to promote ideas of charity and empathy amongst four to 11-year-olds through active participation.
