PLANS for a community cafe are going ahead at a different venue.

The venture is set to open at the Old Church in Front Street Sacriston after plans to set up in nearby Edmondsley fell through.

Edmondsley resident Kirstie Scott originally planned to launch the project in the village’s Jubilee Hall.

The building’s owner was not agreeable but the former church, which is now a venue for arts events, became available.

A community interest company is being formed to run the cafe, which is due to hold a “meet and greet”event, when people can find out more, on Thursday (May 1) .

Mrs Scott said: “It will not only provide hot and cold drinks and food, but also provide services like a credit union, a food bank, a clothes swap shop, help and support for the elderly, training and support for young adults, job search help and advice, free internet, a breakfast club and so much more.

“We are looking for as much support as we can get and are looking for volunteers. Anyone interested should just come along.”

She added that the venue, formerly St Peter’s Church “is absolutely beautiful”.
