A SPECIAL market held during the Easter weekend has been hailed a success.

The designer makers' market was the first of its kind to be held in Barnard Castle and attracted 1,500 to The Witham arts complex, where it was staged.

Some 20 craftspeople and artisans took part, some locally based and others travelling from as far as Pontefract.

Organiser Kathryn Guy said: “As well as artists and craftspeople selling their work, there were also lots of opportunities for the public to have a go at the many crafts on offer, as well as watching demonstrations.”

The event also raised more than £200 in donations for St Teresa’s Hospice.

Ms Guy added: “There was a real buzz throughout the two days, all the visitors were extremely interested in what we do and most had a go at something themselves.”

Katy Taylor, assistant manager at The Witham, said: “Visitors came from far and wide and for most it was their first visit to the venue.”

Ms Guy said following the success of the market, a Christmas event is being planned for November 22 and 23.
