WALKERS are being encouraged to pull on their hiking boots to enjoy one of the most spectacular landscapes in the region.

The second Rosedale Walking Festival on the North York Moors offers everything from a leisurely stroll to a wildlife ramble to a cross-country hike.

In 2012 Rosedale Abbey, the main village in the dale, became the first on the Moors to gain official “Walkers are Welcome” status following a tough selection process.

The scheme aims to highlight areas which have demonstrated a real commitment to make visits from walkers as enjoyable as possible.

The first festival, last year, proved to be a big success and this year the committee behind the event have even more on offer.

It takes place on June 14 and 15 and on the Saturday walkers will be able to choose from a meander around the local teashops, a Pilgrims’ Way walk or a short ramble for families with young children.

The Sunday events will focus on the rich wildlife and history of the dale, including a walk following the old railway line at the top of the dale’s famous Chimney Bank.

Places on the Walking Festival events range from £1 for the family walk to £12 for the teashop walk - which includes refreshments at the various tea-rooms; most cost £4. Children take part for free.

Walkers can turn up on the day, but numbers are limited. To book tickets in advance, call 01751-417505 or email walkrosedale@outlook.com
