TWO students will bear an ancient cross with pride after being rewarded for their selfless work.

For more than a century the solid silver Cuthbert Cross has been awarded to those whose “honourable and chivalrous conduct” contributes most to life at Northallerton College.

And this year Jack Cornforth, 17, and Hannah Kirk, 18, have been selected for their work in enhancing and promoting the reputation of the college.

At a special Year 13 assembly Jack, of Brompton, was praised for his work as a peer mentor, rugby coach and student ambassador. After completing his A-levels he plans to take a gap year before possibly training to be a paramedic.

“I was delighted to have been chosen for this honour,” he said. “I’m currently a first aider and the idea of saving people really appeals.”

Hannah, of Northallerton, was recognised for being a peer mentor and working as a sports technician, helping the college’s PE department.

A forward with Brompton Ladies, she has secured a football scholarship at the University Mount Olive, in North Carolina.

“I was really happy that people voted for me and am now looking forward to going to America,” she said.

“I have played for Brompton for ten seasons and this year scored in 20 of 21 matches. If I enjoy America I hope to get a job there but I also have the option of studying a masters in psychology in the UK.”

Associate principal Mike Holmes said: “It is a real privilege to see these young people, who I first met when they were 11, about to go out and do something very exciting.”

Head of sixth form Bronia Harris added: “I would like to thank all the students for their volunteering and contribution to the college.”
