VOLUNTEERS aged over 50 are needed to help shape a campaign about the dangers of drink to older people.

Last year, Age UK County Durham worked with Durham County Council to explore the reasons some older people drink too much alcohol and the associated risks.

Now it is using that information to tackle the issue and the first initiative will be the creation of literature to raise awareness.

The charity’s EngAge team wants to gather the views of people aged 50 plus, who live in the Spennymoor area, about how the leaflet should look.

Clare Midgley, development worker- consultation and involvement, said: “Some older people are drinking to harmful levels without realising it.

“Sometimes it is cultural, sometimes they drink because they are lonely and sometimes there is a lack of awareness, a belief that it is medicinal.

“We are starting to work through the recommendations of that initial work and want to produce literature aimed specifically at older people.

“We want that age group to help us make sure the text and graphics are right, it is understandable and will get the messages across in an appropriate and effective way.”

The finished leaflet will be widely circulated across the county through venues such as health centres and welfare offices.

A consultation event will be held in the Green Room at St Paul’s Centre, Spennymoor, on Wednesday, May 21 from 1.30pm to 3.30pm.

Free refreshments available.
