George Simpson’s sister Elizabeth had been married to Dennis Collin for some time before Mr Simpson tied the knot with Mr Collin’s sister, Eva, at Oakenshaw Memorial Chapel, near Willington, on June 5, 1954.

Mr Simpson, a retired miner from Durham who is now 87, and his wife, 83, who is originally from Oakenshaw, now live in Coxhoe.

They have two sons, Peter and Paul, and a daughter, Christine, and five grandchildren.

They celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary at home with relatives.
