A CHARITY that helps people of all ages make positive changes to their lives is celebrating after receiving an outstanding Ofsted rating.

Inspectors described the employability courses offered by Disc (Developing Initiatives Supporting Communities) at its education centre in Newton Aycliffe as “exciting and stimulating”.

As well as observing teaching sessions, the inspectors visited work experience placements, met with delivery partners and spoke to managers, directors and members of the Disc board of trustees.

Angie Hutchinson, director of health and young people’s services at Disc, said “We are thrilled with the result of the inspection. The teaching and learning alongside leadership and management have been exemplary. The inspectors have also recognised the considerable work of the staff and learners and how close links with partner agencies and local employers contribute to the success of the service.”

The DISC Steps4Success course is aimed at 16 to 18-year-olds and ranges from two to 40 weeks in duration.

A typical programme comprises three days per week split between a work placement and classroom studies.

Last year, 98 per cent of young people completed their training programme, with a 90 per cent pass rate.

Places are still available for courses beginning this month and next.
