WALL ART: Student Abi Davies looks on at part of the mural she has created at the Darlington College site at Catterick.
A TALENTED teen has created a mural on the walls of her college in Catterick Garrison after being challenged by staff to produce artwork that would inspire students.
Darlington College students on the Project-U course at the Catterick Garrison Skills Centre are encouraged to view the college as their own space so staff invited Abi Davies, 18, to create a mural to cover an entire wall of the centre.
Project-U manager Tracey Laycock said: “Abi is an amazing painter and she decided to select the different subjects that we teach here and paint something for each.
“We run courses for hair and beauty, public services, health and childcare and painting and decorating, and she found images for each and painted them with painstaking detail – it took her about two months to complete and she spent hours and hours each day.”
Miss Davies said she wants to be a graphic designer and that she has enjoyed learning new skills at the college.
She said: “The course has taught me to be more patient and that if I try hard I can succeed. It has given me something to focus on and work towards.”
The mural includes badges for police and fire services and the Army.
Ms Laycock said: “It is great for her to have had a project of this size to focus on, especially when it something she enjoys so much.
“It is all part of the Project-U course which helps students gain skills for employment.
“One of the key focuses is on developing good communication and working skills, all essential for seeking employment.”
