DARLINGTON was transformed into a riot of colour today as the town's annual carnival took over the streets.
Hundreds of people, many of them children, took part in a parade through the town centre before a family fun day event in Stanhope Green.
Dozens of charities and community organisations were also represented at the carnival, which expects to raise up to £30,000 for worthy causes.
The carnival began in the Market Square where a number of dance troupes from across the town gave performances before more than 600 people lined up for a colourful, and noisy, parade along High Row and through Skinnergate and Duke Street before ending in the park.
Drummers helped to create a carnival atmosphere for the Dancing in the Street themed event, with many of the participants giving a nod to the World Cup in Brazil with a samba theme.
Carnival committee chairman Steve Rose said he was thrilled with the turnout, adding: "People have really taken it to their hearts, this is the most people we've ever had get involved with the parade.
"It puts a smile on your face and as a committee we are delighted."
The Darlington Carnival will continue in Stanhope Green, with a funfair, live music and games, for the rest of the afternoon.
