A FUNDRAISING barbecue raised more than £5,000 for a military charity.

Retired GP Ian Bagshaw organised the Bear-B-Q night, at Hurworth Grange, on Saturday (June 28).

More than 200 people attended and were entertained by Leeds-based tribute act the Pretend Beatles.

Dr Bagshaw, who retired as a GP three years ago, is also a former Army medic.

He organised the barbecue to raise funds for Help For Heroes.

Dr Bagshaw said: "I have a great affinity for soldiers, so it was a pleasure to organise such a successful fundraiser.

"It was a real triumph, a terrific night."

Dr Bagshaw has thanked everyone who helped make the event a success.

He added: "What was particularly outstanding was that Hurworth Grange provided all its excellent facilities free of any charge.

"Hurworth Grange manager Keith Sandick and his team were nothing short of amazing in managing to cater for the 210 people who attended this event.

"Nothing was any trouble and the service was seamless."

Dr Bagshaw has also thanked business that provided raffle prizes.

Sailors from HMS Hurworth, who were making their annual visit to the village, helped put up the marquee for the event.

Dr Bagshaw added: "The Pretend Beatles were authentic and provided their music at a most generous rate allowing the maximum sum to go to our charity.

"My sincere thanks to everyone who was in any way involved in this event."
