A GARDEN party has raised hundreds of pounds to improve facilities at a community hospital.

Large crowds gathered in the gardens of Sedgefield Community Hospital for the annual fundraiser on Saturday, June 28.

It was organised by Julie Welford, who has devoted the last 36 years to raising money for the hospital amenities funds, which provides extra facilities and treats for patients.

As well as shopping at a variety of stalls, visitors enjoyed afternoon tea and a varied programme of entertainment.

Highlights included a performance by Spennymoor Youth Band and children’s magician, Steve Lewis.

A total of £900 was raised, with Sedgefield Co-operative store presenting a cheque for a further £230, raised at a recent raffle.

Hayley Gibson, team manager at Sedgfield Co-op, said the hospital was a cause that was close to the hearts of staff and customers.

She said: “My grandfather received excellent care at this hospital, so I suggested the amenities fund should benefit from one of the Co-op’s many fund raising activities.”

Store manager Stephen Mould added: “The Sedgefield branch supports many charities, both national and local, and we are very keen to play a major part in the community.”
