Skate park wins praise of police commissioner ahead of summer coaching sessions
AN indoor skate park that has attracted hundreds of young people since it opened its doors in April has won praise from the Durham Police and Crime Commissioner.
The 4 Motion Skate Park, based on the Faverdale Industrial Estate, registered 2,694 visits in its first two months and is now preparing for its key summer season by offering week-long coaching sessions.
The project, run by 4 Motion, a charity for wheeled sport, won the support of police commissioner Ron Hogg who gave £5,000 towards building work as part of his community funding.
Mr Hogg said: "I was pleased to provide funding towards this initiative last year and have been keen to see the benefits the skate park has brought to the local community.
“Facilities such as this are important for young people, as they have a safe environment to go to outside of school or college, whilst developing their own fitness levels and skills.”
The skate park attracts people from as young as six, with many teenagers and adults using the facility, which is open six days a week.
Nigel Potter, who led the project, said: "It's only been possible with the support of lots of people especially the trustees of 4Motion Darlington and businesses around the town. The feedback about the park has been great.”
The skate park will begin its summer coaching sessions on July 28.
Coaching will take place for BMX, scooters and skateboards in five day blocks between 10am and 11.45am from July 28 to August 3; August 11 to August 17 and August 18 to August 24.
Mountain bike coaching, held at the West Park bike track, will take place from Monday, August 4 to Friday, August 10, between 10am and 11.45am.
Each five day coaching block costs £25 and must be booked in advance.
