WORK is due to begin on a £1.1m upgrade to a sewer network on a Durham City housing estate.

Northumbrian Water says essential work will be carried out in Salisbury Road and York Crescent, in Newton Hall, to reduce the likelihood of flooding to seven properties.

Contractors, Lumsden & Carroll Civil Engineering will begin work, expected to last about six months, from Monday (July 28).

The scheme will include the construction of a waste water retention tank within the play park area at Salisbury Road and the installation of a new sewer pipe along Salisbury Road and York Crescent.

A spokesman for the water firm said: “It will be necessary to have some traffic management in place during the course of our work.

“This will include a rolling road closure along sections of Salisbury Road and York Crescent for the duration we are on site.”

Anyone who is going to be directly affected by the work will be informed of the dates a week in advance.

Construction traffic will need to access all working areas and the site compound, which will be located in the field adjacent to the Newton Grange Pub.
