A TEACHING assistant has emerged top of the class after a successful apprenticeship led to a permanent job.

Nicola Bourner proved a big hit with staff and children at Sedgefield Hardwick Primary School while studying for an NVQ qualification in child care.

And her hard work paid off, with the 20-year-old securing her dream job as a nursery key worker and breakfast club supervisor.

Miss Bourner, from Sedgefield, said she would recommend the apprenticeship route.

“This has been an excellent opportunity for me that has changed my life,” she said.

“The staff and children here at Hardwick are amazing to work with and I felt part of the team as soon as I arrived”

Working in partnership, Durham County Council’s employability team and the East Durham Rural Corridor Area Action Partnership (AAP) have combined funding to create 29 apprenticeships in the area.

Sally Newton, headteacher at Sedgefield Hardwick, said “It has been a privilege to provide high quality training opportunities through the apprenticeship scheme.

“Nicola has fully embraced the ethos and culture of Sedgefield Hardwick.”
