HUNDREDS of young people have enjoyed a range of sports at a summer sports camp in Durham City.
As part of their efforts, youngsters attending the camp at Durham Gilesgate Youth and Community Association joined in the spirit of the Commonwealth Games by creating a banner celebrating the event.
Centre manager Ann Ferguson said: “This is the 16th year we have been running the summer sports camps. We have a week of activities at Easter and two weeks in the summer.
“We have a covenant that states that physical inactivity is a national epidemic. Well, all I can say is not at Gilesgate.
“We have had children from the age of five to 14 years doing a whole range of sports, including football, trampoline, gymnastics, tennis, basketball, cricket.
“There have been about 80 people attending every day.”
The centre, which is based at Durham Free School (formerly Durham Gilesgate Sports College) hired a mini-bus to go around to rural villages of Kelloe, Cassop, Bowburn, Sherburn and Quarrington Hill, where parents might not have transport.
The association, which is self-funding, has six staff full-time members of staff and five volunteers.
