A PROJECT to help tackle issues such as domestic violence and drug and alcohol abuse will receive a £233,000 Big Lottery grant.

The Cornforth Partnership has been awarded funding for its Healthy Changes project, a new scheme aimed at helping people in need develop healthy coping strategies.

It will see the introduction of new support services focused on healthy living, drug and alcohol awareness and domestic violence.

The services will be delivered by specialist project workers and will include one-to-one sessions and group workshops, all tailored to meet the needs of the individual or family.

Activities will be open to everyone in the Cornforth parish but are particularly aimed at young people, aged 11 to 16-years-old, and residents living in poverty or with long standing health issues.

It is hoped the project will lead to the formation of new friendships and support networks to allow residents to help one another.

The ultimate aim is to break the cycle of abuse and curb anti-social behaviour by reaching out to families before they reach crisis point.

Karen Lynn, chief executive of the Cornforth Partnership, said people often form unhealthy relationships or turn to drugs and alcohol as a method of coping in difficult times.

She said: “The Big Lottery Fund’s Reaching Communities grant will enable the partnership to set a new and exciting Healthy Changes service that will focus on providing help and support to vulnerable families and young people.

“Families often face difficulties and struggle with a wide range of complex issues. The service will provide the support they need to enable them to make positive changes and healthier lifestyle choices.”

The Big Lottery Fund’s Reaching Communities programme helps people and communities in need with grants from £10,000.

Tim Davies-Pugh, Big Lottery Fund deputy director for England, said “This money will make a life changing difference to the Cornforth community helping to bring people on the cusp of society back into the community, changing their lives for the better.”
